Position Description: Retail Assistant, National Defense University Foundation Store


The National Defense University Foundation Store is currently seeking an experienced and friendly Retail Assistant to deliver excellent customer service in our Foundation Store located in the National Defense University on Fort McNair in Washington, DC. The Foundation support the National Defense University and deliver top-notch service to the school’s students from across the Nation and around the world!

The Retail Assistant is responsible for maintaining and operating all Foundation Store-related functions under the supervision of the NDU Foundation Operations Manager. This includes: point of sale reports, maintaining and tracking inventory, stocking, re-stocking the store, and closing/opening responsibilities. Often, the Foundation employee working at the Foundation Store may be the first exposure a customer has had to the Foundation. Engaging positively with the faculty, staff, students, administrators and visitors to National Defense University and to the Foundation presents an opportunity to promote both the University and the Foundation. Military spouses are encouraged to apply.

This is not a federal service position.


Candidates must be able to lift up to 40 lbs, stand for long periods of time, and have the ability to operate a computerized cash register system. Staff may work in a confined and limited space. Must be able to pass a background check and drug testing for base access. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to the NDU staff, students and military members
  • Have the ability to work independently
  • Bilingual is a plus
  • Prior retail experience, cash-handling, inventory management and customer service experience
  • Strong merchandising skills
  • Knowledge of Square POS system
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, no holidays or weekends
  • Naturally enjoy interacting with people
  • Strong multi-tasking skills
  • Able to proactively intercept, engage, and demonstrate product to customers in a positive, welcoming, and outgoing manner, and able to effectively communicate product features

Compensation and hours: The salary for this position is $17 per hour.

Job Type: Part Time, 8-12 hours per week.
